Can you keep a French Bulldog in an HDB flat? No

The French Bulldog is not on the HDB-approved breed list, at any weight, and no licensing route changes that. HDB flats may keep one dog of an approved small breed; condos and landed homes may keep up to three dogs, subject to the estate's own rules, which is where the Frenchie belongs in Singapore.

We tell you this before you fall for the ears, not after. If you're in an HDB flat and love this exact look, the Boston Terrier is the approved-list cousin with the same bat ears and tuxedo charm, and we stock it; if you're in private housing, carry on, the rest of this page is for you.

Read HDB's guidelines on keeping pets

The housing rules, straight

  • HDB flat: Frenchie not approved, no exceptions we can promise
  • Condo / landed: up to three dogs (AVS limits of ownership)
  • HDB readers: the Boston Terrier is the approved lookalike

Frenchie Temperament: The Easy Half of the Deal

Nobody needs this page to sell them a Frenchie's personality; the world's most popular breed got there on charm. Easygoing, comic, sturdy with children, quiet by companion-breed standards, and blessed with an energy ceiling low enough that a genuinely busy household can still meet it: twenty minutes of cool-hour walking and some living-room comedy covers the day.

The honest part, from two years of matching buyers who arrive pre-sold: the Frenchie's temperament is the easy half of the deal. The other half is the two disciplines this page keeps returning to, housing (settled above) and heat (settled below), plus a companionship need that makes empty 8am-to-6pm homes a poor fit. Buyers who accept all three get one of the most likeable dogs ever bred.

Want the charm with easier breathing and HDB legality? That's the Boston Terrier, honestly.

Can a Frenchie Be Left Alone During Work Hours?

Moderately well. Frenchies are sociable but profoundly gifted nappers, and a settled routine in a safe playpen suits the breed's actual energy level. Most treat a quiet weekday as scheduled rest, with the sociability spent generously on evenings and weekends.

The non-negotiable is the room itself: cool, ventilated, shaded, water everywhere, fan or aircon running through the afternoon. A flat-faced dog in a hot enclosed space is an emergency waiting to happen, and this breed wears the flattest face of all.

Good fit if

  • Private housing with reliable aircon
  • You want big charm on a low exercise budget
  • Family with kids; Frenchies are sturdy and patient

Frenchie Size, Coat and Lifespan

Honest numbers for the world's favourite bat ears.

Frenchie Size, Coat and Lifespan
TraitWhat to expect
Adult weightRoughly 9 to 13 kg, kept lean - and lean is a health requirement, not aesthetics
HeightAround 28 to 33 cm at the shoulder
CoatShort, smooth; fawn, brindle, pied and cream are the classic, health-sound colours
Lifespan10 to 12 years with good weight and heat management
ExerciseAbout 20 to 30 minutes a day in the cool hours; the lowest requirement among our private-housing breeds
Shedding & allergiesModerate year-round shedding; not the pick for allergy-sensitive homes

On "exotic" colours, since the market pushes them hard: blue, lilac and merle Frenchies are marketed at steep premiums, and some dilute colours carry their own skin problems. We stock the classic, health-sound colours and price every one inside the same printed range. If you're comparing sizes upward, the English Bulldog is the heavyweight cousin.

French Bulldog Price in Singapore: What Drives the Spread

The market runs $4,000 to $10,000 and makes you enquire anyway. Here's ours in writing: $6,800 to $8,800, all-in, whatever the colour.

Typical Singapore market

  • Frenchie price commonly $4,000 to $10,000
  • "Blue", "lilac" and "merle" priced at steep premiums
  • Price usually not published; enquiry required
  • Starter supplies, training and delivery charged separately

Curious Tails

  • $6,800 to $8,800, printed right here, colour hype excluded
  • $500+ starter kit with 30+ items included
  • Free home delivery with the playpen set up before you arrive
  • Free first lesson with an AVS-certified trainer, plus free boarding after deposit

Why is our price printed? We don't carry the marketing spend the bigger names do, and we'd rather win on value and word of mouth. Compare the full picture on our transparent puppy pricing page, and plan the ongoing costs with the first-year puppy budget guide.

The $500+ Starter Kit Every Frenchie Goes Home With

Every French Bulldog leaves us with a starter kit worth $500 and up: more than 30 items across eight categories, a playpen, a carrier, grooming tools, puppy food, outdoor gear, toilet training supplies, oral health care, and toys. For this breed three items lead: the harness, because no flat-faced throat should ever take leash pressure; the measuring cup, because a lean Frenchie is a breathing Frenchie; and the wet wipes for the daily fold ritual.

On delivery day, Nelson or Kim walks you through every item: how to use it, and how it fits into your Frenchie's daily care. Most of the questions new owners would otherwise ask later are answered before we leave your home.

See the full 30+ item kit breakdown, category by category.

Is a Frenchie Right for Your Lifestyle?

We ask about your housing before your heart gets a vote. Here's the honest short version for a French Bulldog.

Is a Frenchie Right for Your Lifestyle?
Your situationOur honest take
Condo or landed home with reliable airconIdeal. This is the Frenchie's Singapore habitat
Family with children, low-exercise wishesGreat fit. Sturdy, patient, comic, and done after a short walk
HDB flatNot eligible, full stop. The Boston Terrier is the approved lookalike, and it's a genuinely good swap
Midday-outdoor or jogging lifestyleWrong breed entirely. Flat faces and heat exertion don't mix

Frenchie vs Boston Terrier: The Rules Decide

Visually they're cousins; administratively they live on different planets. The Boston Terrier is on the HDB-approved list; the French Bulldog is not, full stop, and for most Singapore buyers that single line ends the comparison. The Boston also happens to be lighter, more athletic, and generally easier-breathing thanks to a slightly longer muzzle.

For private housing where both are legal, it's a fair fight: the Frenchie is stockier, more famous, and arguably the bigger personality; the Boston is nimbler and rarer. Both demand the same disciplined heat care. With us the price, the starter kit, and the aftercare are identical either way, and the Pug rounds out the flat-faced shortlist for HDB homes.

Weighing them? See our Boston Terrier puppies, or message us your housing and we'll tell you straight.

Quick comparison

  • Frenchie: private housing only, stockier, most famous
  • Boston: HDB-approved, lighter, easier breathing
  • Same price, same starter kit, same aftercare either way

Grooming: Easy Coat, One Daily Ritual

Coat care is a weekly once-over with a soft brush and an occasional bath; the short coat manages itself apart from honest moderate shedding. No salon schedule, no mats. The bat ears, unlike most companion breeds' drop ears, stay open and ventilated, one genuinely low-maintenance feature in our humidity.

The daily ritual is the folds: those facial wrinkles trap moisture, and in tropical air a neglected fold turns sore within days. Thirty seconds with a wipe, then dry, every day. Add nails and the tooth-brushing habit and that's the entire manual.

French Bulldog puppy having its facial folds gently cleaned

Frenchie Health: The Honest List

Every Frenchie goes home vet-checked, vaccinated, dewormed, and microchipped, and this is the breed where informed ownership matters most, so here is the list stated plainly. Brachycephalic airway syndrome: the flattest face in our shop breathes the least efficiently, which is why heat discipline and lean weight are lifelong requirements, and why snoring is normal but laboured breathing after mild activity is a vet visit. The spine: Frenchies carry a higher rate of back issues (IVDD), so no stair marathons, no leaping from furniture, and a harness always. Skin folds: daily ritual, above.

Feeding is simple: your puppy comes with the food it is already eating, and any change should be gradual over a week; measured portions from the very first meal, because every extra hundred grams loads that short airway. See the puppy health checks explained guide.

Living Flat-Faced in Singapore: The Strictest Heat Rules on This Site

Every flat-faced breed page we write carries heat rules; the Frenchie's carry an extra underline, because this is the most heat-vulnerable breed we sell. Dogs cool themselves by panting, the Frenchie pants least efficiently of all, and Singapore is 30-plus degrees with tropical humidity most of the year.

The rules: short walks before 9am or after 6pm only, never midday, ever; shade and water on every outing; a cool, ventilated room with fan or aircon through every afternoon; lean body weight for life; and, unique to this breed among our lineup, no unsupervised water, because Frenchies cannot swim. Emergency signs: relentless heavy panting, a very dark red tongue, wobbliness. Cool water on the body, aircon, and the vet, in that order, fast.

The heat rules

  • Short walks, cool hours only, never midday
  • Aircon or fan through every afternoon
  • Lean for life; no unsupervised pool access

Your Frenchie’s First Week at Home

Day 0: we deliver, free, at a time that suits you, usually morning or evening. The playpen, bed, water, and toys are set up before your Frenchie explores the room, and we walk you through all 30+ starter-kit items in person. Learn more about how our free home delivery and setup works.

Days 1 to 3: keep it calm, cool and predictable. Measured portions from the first meal, the toilet pads where we placed them, the fold-wipe ritual starting immediately, and the aircon doing its quiet work. The snoring is permanent equipment; most owners come to love it.

Days 4 to 7: the routine sticks and the comedy begins. Book your free first lesson with an AVS-certified trainer this week; see what the free AVS-certified training lesson covers.

Couldn't recommend Curious Tails in Balestier enough after bringing home our Maltipoo. Right from our first enquiry, Nelson offered practical, real-world care advice and made everything easy for us. They followed up after a few days just to check how our pup was settling in. They gave us ample time to interact with the puppies before we decided. Genuinely the best decision we made, highly recommended.

We'd been looking everywhere for a healthy Cavapoo puppy for sale in Singapore, and Curious Tails in Balestier turned out to be the best by far. Big thanks to Kim, who offered thoughtful tips on training and care and were incredibly accommodating. The full vaccination was already covered, which showed how much they care. Forever grateful to the team, our pup is the best thing that's happened to us.

We'd been comparing breeders for weeks, and Curious Tails in Balestier stood head and shoulders above the rest. It was clear Nelson knew their stuff, as they were happy to help with even the small things and knew their stuff inside and out. Everything from the health records to the paperwork was handled seamlessly. The $500+ starter pack was such a generous surprise and got us set up right away. We couldn't be more pleased, an easy five stars.

Buying safely: verify any pet shop's AVS licence first

Before any deposit on a French Bulldog, search the seller on the AVS public registry of licensed pet shops. A seller who is not on it is not licensed, whatever the listing claims.

Curious Tails holds AVS pet shop licence AS24J00046. Check us first; an honest shop won't mind, and a genuine seller never will. Few breeds attract smugglers like the world's most famous one: Frenchie puppies sold outside licensed channels are often smuggled without vaccination, and buyers have been fined $7,000 for unknowingly purchasing one.

Search the AVS public registry

French Bulldog FAQs

Can I keep a French Bulldog in an HDB flat?

No. The French Bulldog is not on the HDB-approved breed list, and we won't pretend otherwise or promise workarounds. Condos and landed homes may keep up to three dogs, so a Frenchie is very much on the table there. HDB readers: the Boston Terrier gives you the same bat-eared, flat-faced charm and IS on the approved list - we stock both.

How much does a French Bulldog cost in Singapore?

Frenchie prices in Singapore run famously wide, commonly $4,000 to $10,000, with "exotic" colours like blue and lilac marketed at the top. At Curious Tails, French Bulldog puppies are $6,800 to $8,800 regardless of colour fashion, and that price already includes the $500+ starter kit, free home delivery and setup, and a free first training lesson with an AVS-certified trainer.

How do Frenchies cope with Singapore heat?

This is the most heat-vulnerable breed we carry, and we say so plainly. The rules are strict and non-negotiable: short walks in the early morning or evening only, never midday; shade and water on every outing; a cool, ventilated room with fan or aircon through every afternoon; and a lean body weight for life. Managed this way, Frenchies live happily here. Pushed through heat, they are in genuine danger, fast.

Can a Frenchie be left alone while we are at work?

Moderately well. Frenchies are sociable but world-class nappers, and a settled routine with a safe playpen suits their genuinely low energy. The non-negotiable is the room: cool and ventilated all day, because a flat-faced dog must never sit out a Singapore afternoon in a hot space.

Why are some Frenchies $10,000 and others $3,000?

Colour marketing, mostly. "Blue", "lilac" and "merle" Frenchies are sold at steep premiums, and some of those dilute colours carry their own skin issues. We don't play that game: our Frenchies are priced $6,800 to $8,800 by our standard range, not by colour hype, and we'll tell you honestly what any coat colour does and doesn't mean.

Can French Bulldogs swim?

No, and for condo households this matters: a Frenchie's heavy front and short muzzle make it sink, quickly. Treat every pool deck, and even a deep bathtub, as a supervised-only zone, and if your condo life revolves around the pool, factor that in before choosing this breed.

What happens after I reserve a French Bulldog?

You place a deposit, and we board your puppy for free, food and lodging covered, until you're ready. Delivery is scheduled around your availability, and we set up the playpen and walk you through all 30+ starter-kit items before we leave.
