What is a Pug?

The Pug is an ancient companion breed of roughly 6 to 8 kg, bred in China as a palace lapdog and famous ever since for its wrinkled flat face, curled tail and comic, even temperament. It comes in fawn with a black mask, or solid black, with a lifespan of 12 to 15 years.

Curious Tails is an AVS licensed pet shop at 2 Balestier Road. We match by lifestyle first, and the Pug is a superb family companion for homes that will honestly commit to its two rules: keep it cool, and keep it lean.

Pug at a glance

  • Roughly 6 to 8 kg; sturdy and compact
  • Fawn with black mask, or solid black
  • Even-tempered, comic, great with kids
  • Flat-faced: heat care is non-negotiable here
  • 12 to 15 year lifespan

Sizes vary by line; ask us about a specific puppy's expected adult weight.

Pug Temperament: Multum in Parvo, a Lot of Dog in a Little Space

The breed's Latin motto translates to "a lot in a little", and it's accurate. The Pug is a full-sized personality in a compact body: even-tempered, sociable with everyone from toddlers to grandparents, stubborn only about comfort, and genuinely funny in a way that makes Pug owners lifelong Pug owners. It doesn't guard, doesn't hunt, and holds no grudges; company is the whole job description, and it's excellent at it.

The honest part, from two years of matching puppies to families: the Pug's easygoing nature hides two non-negotiables. It must stay cool, because the flat face makes heat genuinely dangerous here, and it must stay lean, because a Pug will eat anything, look at you like it's starving, and gain weight faster than any breed we carry. Owners who hold those two lines get one of the best companion dogs in existence.

If you want the same family-friendly nature with lower heat sensitivity, look at the Shih Tzu, which carries a milder version of the flat-face trade-off.

Can a Pug Be Left Alone During Work Hours?

Reasonably well. Pugs are sociable but profoundly gifted nappers, and a settled routine in a safe playpen suits the breed's actual energy level, which is modest. Most Pugs treat a quiet weekday as scheduled rest between weekend performances.

The non-negotiable is the room itself: cool, ventilated, shaded from afternoon sun, water everywhere. A flat-faced dog must never spend a Singapore afternoon in a hot enclosed space; that's the deal you sign when you choose this wonderful breed.

Good fit if

  • Family with kids; Pugs adore them
  • Modest exercise appetite suits your week
  • You can keep its room cool all day

Pug Size, Coat and Lifespan

Honest numbers, including the shedding one.

Pug Size, Coat and Lifespan
TraitWhat to expect
Adult weightRoughly 6 to 8 kg kept lean, and lean is the operative word
HeightAround 25 to 33 cm at the shoulder
CoatShort, smooth double coat; fawn with black mask, or solid black
Lifespan12 to 15 years with good weight and heat management
ExerciseAbout 20 to 30 minutes a day in the cool hours, plus indoor play
Shedding & allergiesHeavy year-round shedding despite the short coat; not the pick for allergy-sensitive homes

The shedding genuinely surprises people: short coat, big output, especially from fawn Pugs with their double coats. If hair on the sofa is a dealbreaker, the Shih Tzu or Toy Poodle coat covers the companion brief without it.

Pug Price in Singapore (October 2026): What You'll Pay and What's Included

How much is a Pug in Singapore? Checked in October 2026: published listings run $4,000 to $9,000, with two shops at $4,800. Ours is $4,588 to $5,288, all-in.

Typical Singapore market

  • Published Pug listings range $4,000 to $9,000, two shops at $4,800
  • Price usually not published; enquiry required
  • Black Pugs often priced at a premium
  • Starter supplies, training and delivery charged separately

Curious Tails

  • $4,588 to $5,288, printed right here
  • $500+ starter kit with 30+ items included
  • Free home delivery with the playpen set up before you arrive
  • Free first lesson with an AVS-certified trainer, plus free boarding after deposit

Why is our price printed? We don't carry the marketing spend the bigger names do, and we'd rather win on value and word of mouth. Compare the full picture on our transparent puppy pricing page, and plan the ongoing costs with the first-year puppy budget guide.

The $500+ Starter Kit Every Pug Goes Home With

Every Pug leaves us with a starter kit worth $500 and up: more than 30 items across eight categories, a playpen, a carrier, grooming tools, puppy food, outdoor gear, toilet training supplies, oral health care, and toys. For a Pug the measuring cup is the quiet hero of the kit; portion discipline from day one is the single best thing you can do for this breed's health, and the harness matters because flat-faced dogs should never take pressure on the throat.

On delivery day, Nelson or Kim walks you through every item: how to use it, and how it fits into your Pug's daily care. Most of the questions new owners would otherwise ask later are answered before we leave your home.

Is a Pug Right for Your Lifestyle?

We ask about your routine before recommending any breed. Here's the honest short version for a Pug.

Is a Pug Right for Your Lifestyle?
Your situationOur honest take
Family with childrenIdeal. Sturdy, patient, comic; one of the best family small breeds there is
Senior or low-key householdGreat fit. Modest walks and maximum companionship is the Pug's preferred contract
Working household with a cool roomGood fit. World-class nappers; the aircon or fan is the real requirement
Allergy-sensitive householdReconsider. Pugs shed heavily year-round; a Shih Tzu or Poodle cross is the better pick
Active outdoor lifestyle, long midday walksReconsider. Flat faces and Singapore midday heat are a dangerous combination; a Corgi suits that life better if you have private housing

Pug vs French Bulldog: The Flat-Face Face-Off

Cross-shopped constantly, and one difference should decide it for most Singapore readers: the Pug is HDB-approved and the French Bulldog is not. If you live in a flat, the rules have already chosen for you, and happily, because the Pug is the easier keeper anyway: a size smaller, similar even temper, and the same heat rules.

For private housing, the honest comparison: the Frenchie is stockier and a little more headstrong; the Pug sheds more and clowns more. Both need the same disciplined heat management and portion control here.

Weighing the two? See our French Bulldog puppies, or message us your routine and we'll tell you straight.

Quick comparison

  • Pug: 6 to 8 kg, HDB-approved, maximum comedy
  • French Bulldog: 9 to 13 kg, private housing only
  • Same price, same starter kit, same aftercare either way

Keeping a Pug in an HDB flat

The Pug is named on the HDB-approved breed list, so you can keep one in an HDB flat. HDB allows one dog of an approved breed per flat, and the Pug's modest size and indoor temperament suit flat living well. Every Pug we place has its dog licensing completed at purchase, so the paperwork is handled for you.

Is a Pug HDB-approved? Yes, by name on the list, unlike its French Bulldog cousin. Just mind the one-dog-per-flat rule, and if you already have a dog, message us first so we can check your situation.

Read HDB's guidelines on keeping pets

The rules in brief

  • The Pug is named on the HDB-approved breed list
  • One dog of an approved breed per HDB flat (AVS limits of ownership)
  • Condo and landed homes: up to three dogs, subject to your estate's own pet rules

Grooming: Easy Coat, One Daily Ritual

Coat care is the easy part: a weekly brush (which also helps manage the honestly impressive shedding) and an occasional bath. No mats, no salon schedule, no topknots.

The part that actually matters is the wrinkles. Those famous facial folds trap moisture, and in our humidity a neglected fold turns red and sore within days. The ritual: a gentle wipe through every fold daily, then dry; thirty seconds total, and the wet wipes for it are in your starter kit. Add a weekly nail trim and the day-one tooth-brushing habit and that's the entire Pug grooming manual.

Pug Health: What We Check Before You Take One Home

Every Pug goes home vet-checked, vaccinated, dewormed, and microchipped. The Pug health points worth knowing, stated plainly because this breed deserves informed owners: brachycephalic airway syndrome, the flat-face breathing trade-off, which makes heat and overexertion the two things to manage for life; obesity, the most common and most preventable Pug problem, controlled entirely by your portion discipline; the prominent eyes, which scratch easily and deserve a vet look at the first sign of squinting; and skin fold dermatitis, prevented by the daily wrinkle ritual above.

Feeding is simple: your puppy comes with the food it is already eating, and any change should be gradual over a week. For portioning guidance, which matters more for the Pug than any breed we carry, see the puppy health checks explained guide.

Living Flat-Faced in Singapore: The Heat Rules

We put this on every flat-faced breed page we write, because it is the difference between a thriving Pug and an emergency vet visit. Dogs cool themselves by panting; a brachycephalic dog pants inefficiently, and Singapore sits at 30-plus degrees with tropical humidity most of the year.

The rules: walks before 9am or after 6pm, never midday; shade and water on every outing; a cool, ventilated room at home, with fan or aircon through the afternoon; and know the emergency signs: relentless heavy panting, a very dark red tongue, wobbliness. Cool water on the body, aircon, and the vet, in that order.

The heat rules

  • Walks before 9am or after 6pm only
  • Cool, ventilated room through the afternoon
  • Keep it lean; extra weight makes breathing harder

Your Pug’s First Week at Home

Day 0: we deliver, free, at a time that suits you, usually morning or evening. The playpen, bed, water, and toys are set up before your Pug explores the room, and we walk you through all 30+ starter-kit items in person. Learn more about how our free home delivery and setup works.

Days 1 to 3: keep it calm, cool and predictable. A fixed feeding routine with measured portions from the very first meal, the toilet pads where we placed them, and the wrinkle-wipe ritual starting immediately so it becomes normal. Some night snoring is not adjustment; that's permanent, and most owners come to love it.

Days 4 to 7: the routine sticks. Book your free first lesson with an AVS-certified trainer this week; see what the free AVS-certified training lesson covers. For anything in between, you WhatsApp us.

Had such a wonderful experience at Curious Tails! From the moment I stepped in, Kim and Nelson were incredibly warm, patient, and genuinely passionate about what they do. They took the time to walk me through everything and made sure I felt confident and informed every step of the way. The puppies were well taken care of - clean, active, and clearly loved. I really appreciated the transparency with health checks and all the details provided, which gave me a lot of peace of mind. What stood out the most was the aftercare support - you can tell they truly care about both the pets and the owners, not just making a sale. I got my furkid from them on the very day in 2025, and she has brought so much joy into my life. I’m really glad I chose Curious Tails. Highly recommend Curious Tails to anyone looking for a trustworthy and caring pet shop. 🐶💖

As first time dog owners, our family really appreciated how Nelson & Kim provided us with so much assurance and support throughout the whole process. They were knowledgeable and considerate and talked us through what we should expect. Our puppy is the perfect, joyful addition to our family. His exceptional health and bright temperament are a testament to the high standards of Curious Tails. Once we made our decision on our dear little Archie, Nelson assisted with the drop- off and even provided a short training at our house. The entire starter pack is so helpful for first time dog owners as it contains every single item that one would require. Excited to spend time with our new family member - Archie!!

Pug FAQs

Where can I get a pug in Singapore?

You can get a pug in Singapore from Curious Tails, an AVS licensed pet shop in Balestier, at $4,588 to $5,288 all-in as of October 2026. The Pug is HDB-approved, and the price includes the $500+ starter kit, free home delivery and setup, and a first training lesson.

How much is a Pug in Singapore?

A Pug in Singapore costs $4,588 to $5,288 at Curious Tails, all-in. Checking the shops publishing figures in October 2026, Pugs are listed from $4,000 to $9,000, with two separate shops quoting $4,800, so ours sits at the lower end of the real market. That price already includes the $500+ starter kit, free home delivery and setup, and a free first training lesson with an AVS-certified trainer.

What is the Pug price in Singapore right now?

As of October 2026, a Pug puppy at Curious Tails is $4,588 to $5,288, full price in writing. We would rather you spend the difference on the vet relationship than on the puppy: a Pug is a flat-faced breed, and the money that matters over its life is the money that keeps its breathing, eyes and skin folds in good order.

Why does a flat-faced breed cost more to own?

Because the face that makes a Pug a Pug is also a structural compromise. Narrowed airways, prominent eyes and deep skin folds each carry their own care requirement, and in Singapore heat the breathing one is not theoretical. Veterinary specialists are blunt that extreme features raise lifetime cost. We will not pretend otherwise to make a sale, and we will tell you what daily management actually looks like before you commit.

What does a Pug cost in the first year, beyond the purchase price?

Budget for maintenance rather than grooming. A Pug is short-coated, so professional grooming is minimal, but the skin folds need cleaning as a daily routine and the eyes need watching. Add vaccinations, sterilisation, routine vet care and food for a 6 to 8 kg dog, and keep the dog lean, because weight makes every breathing problem worse. Our first-year puppy budget guide sets out the numbers.

Is a Pug HDB-approved?

Yes. The Pug is named on the HDB-approved breed list, so you can keep one in an HDB flat. HDB allows one dog of an approved breed per flat, and we complete the dog licensing for you at purchase, so the paperwork is handled.

Can a Pug be left alone while we are at work?

Reasonably well, on one condition: the room stays cool. Pugs are sociable but also world-class nappers, and a settled routine with a safe playpen suits them fine. Because the breed is flat-faced, the space it spends the day in must be ventilated and shaded; a fan or aircon in our climate is part of responsible Pug ownership, not a luxury.

How do Pugs cope with Singapore heat?

This is the single most important thing to know. Pugs are brachycephalic, so they cool themselves poorly: walks happen early morning or evening only, never midday; water is always available; and home means a cool, ventilated room. Managed this way, Pugs live happily here. Ignored, heat stroke is a real and fast danger for this breed.

Do Pugs shed?

Generously, yes, which surprises people who expect a short coat to mean no hair. The Pug double coat sheds year-round, and fawn Pugs shed most visibly. If low shedding is a priority, this is the wrong breed; look at the Shih Tzu or a Poodle cross instead, and we will say so before you buy.

Are Pugs good with children?

Excellent, and famously so. The Pug is sturdy for its size, even-tempered, playful without being rough, and genuinely enjoys children. Supervise as with any puppy, but this is one of the safest small-breed choices for a family.

What happens after I reserve a Pug?

You place a deposit, and we board your puppy for free, food and lodging covered, until you're ready. Delivery is scheduled around your availability, and we set up the playpen and walk you through all 30+ starter-kit items before we leave.
