What is a Miniature Schnauzer?

The Miniature Schnauzer is a small German terrier-type breed of roughly 5 to 9 kg, bred down from the Standard Schnauzer for farm ratting work. It wears a wiry, low-shedding double coat with the trademark beard and eyebrows, and carries a spirited, alert, people-loving temperament with a lifespan of 12 to 15 years.

Curious Tails is an AVS licensed pet shop at 2 Balestier Road. We match by lifestyle first, and the Mini Schnauzer suits active families who want a sturdy, low-shedding small dog with proper personality.

Miniature Schnauzer Temperament: Terrier Fire, Family Heart

The Mini Schnauzer was bred to clear rats off German farms, and it kept the job's personality: brave, busy, endlessly curious, and convinced it's supervising the household. Unlike many terriers, though, it was also bred to work alongside the family, so all that fire comes wrapped in genuine affection. This is a dog that plays hard with the kids, then falls asleep against your leg.

The honest part, from two years of matching puppies to families: a Schnauzer needs its energy spent, both legs and brain. Forty-five minutes of proper walking a day plus games at home keeps the spirit charming; skip it and the watchdog instinct fills the vacuum with commentary. The chase instinct is real too; this is a leash-first breed around birds and cats.

For a mellower small family dog with similar low shedding, compare the Cockapoo; for the same spirit in a softer coat, the Bichonpoo.

Can a Miniature Schnauzer Be Left Alone During Work Hours?

Moderately well, and better than the clingy companion breeds. Schnauzers are confident, self-contained dogs; solitude itself doesn't distress them the way it does a Maltipoo. The formula for a working household: a real walk before you leave, chew work or a puzzle feeder for the day, and another proper outing in the evening.

The failure mode isn't anxiety, it's boredom with a voice attached. If your weekday can't fit the morning walk, the calmer Shih Tzu or the independent Cavapoo will thank you for it.

Good fit if

  • Active family that walks daily, rain or shine
  • You want low-shedding with real personality
  • Kids at home; this breed is sturdy enough

Miniature Schnauzer Size, Coat and Lifespan

Honest numbers for the sturdiest low-shedding small breed we carry.

Miniature Schnauzer Size, Coat and Lifespan
TraitWhat to expect
Adult weightRoughly 5 to 9 kg; solid and square-built for its size
HeightAround 30 to 36 cm at the shoulder
CoatWiry, low-shedding double coat; salt & pepper is classic, plus black & silver, solid black and white
Lifespan12 to 15 years with good care
ExerciseAbout 45 to 60 minutes a day, plus games; more than the lapdog breeds, honestly
Shedding & allergiesVery low-shedding; one of the classic picks for allergy-sensitive homes

The Mini Schnauzer occupies a useful middle: bigger and sturdier than the toy breeds, still comfortably flat-sized. If 5 to 9 kg with daily walks sounds like more dog than your week allows, the Maltipoo covers the low-shedding brief at half the exercise budget.

Miniature Schnauzer Price in Singapore: What You’ll Pay and What’s Included

Most shops make you WhatsApp them just to learn the number. Here's ours in writing: $4,888 to $5,388, all-in.

Typical Singapore market

  • Mini Schnauzer price commonly $2,500 to $5,500
  • Price usually not published; enquiry required
  • Rare colours priced at a premium
  • Starter supplies, training and delivery charged separately

Curious Tails

  • $4,888 to $5,388, printed right here
  • $500+ starter kit with 30+ items included
  • Free home delivery with the playpen set up before you arrive
  • Free first lesson with an AVS-certified trainer, plus free boarding after deposit

Why is our price printed? We don't carry the marketing spend the bigger names do, and we'd rather win on value and word of mouth. Compare the full picture on our transparent puppy pricing page, and plan the ongoing costs with the first-year puppy budget guide.

The $500+ Starter Kit Every Mini Schnauzer Goes Home With

Every Miniature Schnauzer leaves us with a starter kit worth $500 and up: more than 30 items across eight categories, a playpen, a carrier, grooming tools, small-breed puppy food, outdoor gear, toilet training supplies, oral health care, and toys. For this breed the harness and leash earn their keep first, because a Schnauzer's day is built around its walks, and the measured feeding cup matters more than you'd think; see the diet note below.

On delivery day, Nelson or Kim walks you through every item: how to use it, and how it fits into your Mini Schnauzer's daily care. Most of the questions new owners would otherwise ask later are answered before we leave your home.

See the full 30+ item kit breakdown, category by category.

Is a Miniature Schnauzer Right for Your Lifestyle?

We ask about your routine before recommending any breed. Here's the honest short version for a Mini Schnauzer.

Is a Miniature Schnauzer Right for Your Lifestyle?
Your situationOur honest take
Active family with childrenIdeal. Sturdy, playful, and loves being part of the action
Allergy-sensitive householdGreat fit. The wiry coat is one of the classic low-shedding options
Working household that walks mornings and eveningsGood fit. Confident alone once exercised; the walks are the contract
You want a quiet, low-key lapdogReconsider. This is a spirited watchdog with opinions; the Shih Tzu is the calmer pick
Sedentary routine, minimal walksReconsider. Unspent Schnauzer energy converts directly into barking and mischief

Mini Schnauzer vs Westie: Which Spirited Small Dog?

Two sturdy, low-shedding terrier-type breeds with proper personalities, which is why buyers cross-shop them. The honest differences: the Mini Schnauzer is a touch bigger, more biddable in training, and comes in four colours; the Westie is the more classically stubborn, independent terrier under that white coat, with a slightly lower exercise floor.

Both announce visitors, both need their walks, and both are far sturdier around children than any toy breed. With us the price, the starter kit, and the aftercare are identical either way.

Weighing the two? See our Westie puppies, or message us your routine and we'll tell you straight.

Quick comparison

  • Mini Schnauzer: 5 to 9 kg, more trainable, four colours
  • Westie: 6 to 9 kg, true terrier independence, always white
  • Same price, same starter kit, same aftercare either way

Keeping a Miniature Schnauzer in an HDB flat

The Miniature Schnauzer is named on the HDB-approved breed list, so you can keep one in an HDB flat. HDB allows one dog of an approved breed per flat, and the Mini Schnauzer sits comfortably inside the small-breed rules. Every Mini Schnauzer we place has its dog licensing completed at purchase, so the paperwork is handled for you.

Is a Miniature Schnauzer HDB-approved? Yes, by name on the list, and it has been one of Singapore's most popular HDB breeds for decades. Just mind the one-dog-per-flat rule, and if you already have a dog, message us first so we can check your situation.

Read HDB's guidelines on keeping pets

The rules in brief

  • The Miniature Schnauzer is named on the HDB-approved breed list
  • One dog of an approved breed per HDB flat (AVS limits of ownership)
  • Condo and landed homes: up to three dogs, subject to your estate's own pet rules

Source: AVS limits of ownership

Grooming: The Wiry Coat and the Famous Beard

The Schnauzer coat is low-shedding but not low-maintenance. Plan on brushing 2 to 3 times a week, a clip at the groomer every 4 to 6 weeks to keep the pet coat tidy, and, the part nobody warns you about, daily beard duty. That handsome beard collects water, food and adventure, and a quick comb and wipe after meals keeps it from smelling like everything it's been dipped in.

In our humidity, keep the body coat clipped short and the furnishings (legs and beard) combed through so they never mat. The grooming tools to start are all in your starter kit, and we'll show you the beard routine on delivery day.

Miniature Schnauzer Health: What We Check Before You Take One Home

Every Miniature Schnauzer goes home vet-checked, vaccinated, dewormed, and microchipped. The Schnauzer health points worth knowing: the breed handles dietary fat poorly, with pancreatitis and high blood fats (hyperlipidaemia) its best-known risks, so the feeding rules below are genuinely important; bladder stones occur more often than in most breeds, and generous fresh water every day is the cheap insurance; and eye conditions such as cataracts appear in some lines, worth a look at any adult dog's eyes you're shown.

Feeding is simple: your puppy comes with the food it is already eating, and any change should be gradual over a week. For portioning guidance see the puppy health checks explained guide.

The Schnauzer Diet Rule: Boring Food Is a Feature

If you remember one breed-specific fact from this page, make it this: Miniature Schnauzers and fatty food don't mix. The breed is unusually prone to pancreatitis, a painful and dangerous inflammation usually triggered by rich, oily meals, the char siu end of the dinner table, festive leftovers, anything fried.

The rule in practice: measured portions of its regular food, treats under ten percent of the day's intake, and a family agreement that nobody feeds from the table, however good the beard-and-eyebrows begging performance is. It is a genuinely excellent performance. Hold the line anyway.

Feeding rules

  • No fatty or oily human food, ever
  • Measured meals with the kit's feeding cup
  • Fresh water always, to protect against bladder stones

Your Mini Schnauzer’s First Week at Home

Days 1 to 3: keep it calm and predictable. A fixed feeding routine, the toilet pads where we placed them, and short, gentle play. Some night whimpering is normal adjustment, and this confident breed usually settles quickly.

Days 4 to 7: the routine sticks, and the personality arrives on schedule. Had such a wonderful experience at Curious Tails! From the moment I stepped in, Kim and Nelson were incredibly warm, patient, and genuinely passionate about what they do. They took the time to walk me through everything and made sure I felt confident and informed every step of the way. The puppies were well taken care of - clean, active, and clearly loved. I really appreciated the transparency with health checks and all the details provided, which gave me a lot of peace of mind. What stood out the most was the aftercare support - you can tell they truly care about both the pets and the owners, not just making a sale. I got my furkid from them on the very day in 2025, and she has brought so much joy into my life. I’m really glad I chose Curious Tails. Highly recommend Curious Tails to anyone looking for a trustworthy and caring pet shop. 🐶💖

As first time dog owners, our family really appreciated how Nelson & Kim provided us with so much assurance and support throughout the whole process. They were knowledgeable and considerate and talked us through what we should expect. Our puppy is the perfect, joyful addition to our family. His exceptional health and bright temperament are a testament to the high standards of Curious Tails. Once we made our decision on our dear little Archie, Nelson assisted with the drop- off and even provided a short training at our house. The entire starter pack is so helpful for first time dog owners as it contains every single item that one would require. Excited to spend time with our new family member - Archie!!

A random brunch at Balestier and otw to get tau sar piah, in the end, brought this doggo home. It has been two weeks, many shitty poopy moments but the cuteness on innocent doggo face wipe away all the stinky part of a pet owner. Nelson has been super helpful to answer questions genuinely and without hesitations. Applaud the patience rendered. Highly recommended, you can board the doggo when you’re overseas with a very small fee.

Buying safely: verify any pet shop's AVS licence first

Before any deposit on a Miniature Schnauzer, search the seller on the AVS public registry of licensed pet shops. A seller who is not on it is not licensed, whatever the listing claims.

Curious Tails holds AVS pet shop licence AS24J00046. Check us first; an honest shop won't mind, and a genuine seller never will. Puppies sold outside licensed channels are often smuggled without vaccination, and buyers have been fined $7,000 for unknowingly purchasing one. Popular small breeds like the Mini Schnauzer are smuggled often, so check twice here.

Miniature Schnauzer FAQs

How much does a Miniature Schnauzer cost in Singapore?

Miniature Schnauzer prices in Singapore commonly run from around $2,500 to $5,500 depending on colour and shop. At Curious Tails, Miniature Schnauzer puppies are $4,888 to $5,388, and that price already includes the $500+ starter kit, free home delivery and setup, and a free first training lesson with an AVS-certified trainer.

Is a Miniature Schnauzer HDB-approved?

Yes. The Miniature Schnauzer is named on the HDB-approved breed list, so you can keep one in an HDB flat. HDB allows one dog of an approved breed per flat, and we complete the dog licensing for you at purchase, so the paperwork is handled.

Do Miniature Schnauzers shed? Are they good for allergies?

The Miniature Schnauzer is one of the classic low-shedding breeds: the wiry double coat holds its hair rather than dropping it around the flat. That makes it a strong pick for allergy-sensitive homes. No dog is truly allergen-free, so if allergies are severe, spend time with one at our Balestier shop before deciding.

Can a Miniature Schnauzer be left alone while we are at work?

Moderately well with a settled routine and real exercise around the workday. Schnauzers are confident and self-assured rather than clingy, but they are also alert watchdogs, and a bored one narrates the corridor to your neighbours. A proper morning walk, chew work for the day, and early training on the voice make a working household very workable.

Are Miniature Schnauzers good with children?

Yes, and better than most small breeds. At 5 to 9 kg the Mini Schnauzer is sturdy, playful, and up for the energy children bring. It also has real terrier spirit, so the free first training lesson matters: a Schnauzer that learns manners early is a superb family dog.

Do Miniature Schnauzers bark a lot?

They are born watchdogs, so untrained, yes: doors, lifts and delivery riders all get announced. The fix is early, consistent training and enough physical and mental exercise; a tired, well-taught Schnauzer saves the commentary for things that matter. We set that up in the free first lesson with an AVS-certified trainer.

How do I look after a Schnauzer's beard?

That signature beard is charming and a little high-maintenance. It sits right in the food and water bowl, so it catches crumbs, kibble grease and moisture, and in Singapore's humidity a damp beard can stain and start to smell. The routine is simple: wipe or rinse the beard after meals, dry it, and keep it trimmed and tidy between the 6-to-8-weekly clips. Do that and the beard stays the best feature on the dog rather than the messiest. We show you how on delivery day.

Are Miniature Schnauzers prone to any health problems?

They are a hardy, long-lived breed, but there is one honest thing worth knowing: Schnauzers are more prone than most to high blood fats (hyperlipidemia) and to bladder or kidney stones linked to it. None of this is a reason to avoid the breed; it is a reason to feed sensibly. A good-quality, not-too-fatty diet, a lean body weight, and fresh water always available keep the risk low, and it is one of the things we walk you through at handover. Every Schnauzer we place goes home vet-checked, vaccinated, dewormed and microchipped.

What happens after I reserve a Miniature Schnauzer?

You place a deposit, and we board your puppy for free, food and lodging covered, until you're ready. Delivery is scheduled around your availability, and we set up the playpen and walk you through all 30+ starter-kit items before we leave.
