Can you keep a Whippet in an HDB flat? No

The Whippet is a medium sighthound and is not on the HDB-approved breed list, despite being one of the quietest, calmest indoor dogs there is. HDB flats may keep one dog of an approved small breed; condos and landed homes may keep up to three dogs, subject to the estate's own rules, which is where the Whippet belongs in Singapore.

We tell you this before you fall for the photos, because the Whippet's gentle apartment manners fool people into assuming it qualifies, and it doesn't. If you love the elegant sighthound look but live in an HDB flat, our HDB-approved breeds guide maps the approved options. Private housing readers: carry on, the rest of this page is yours.

Whippet Temperament: The Gentle, Quiet Sighthound

Owners describe the Whippet with the same word again and again: gentle. It is a sensitive, affectionate, quiet dog that adores its people and asks for very little, happiest pressed against you on the sofa. It rarely barks, gets on with other dogs, and brings a calm, elegant presence to a home that belies the sprinter hiding inside. For a private-housing family who wants a big-dog character in a low-drama package, it is a hidden gem.

The honest footnotes. First, that sensitivity cuts both ways: Whippets do not enjoy harsh handling or being left alone all day, and they thrive on gentle, positive training and real companionship. Second, they are lean and thin-coated, so they feel both heat and strong air-conditioning, and appreciate soft bedding and a warm spot away from a cold vent. Third, see the next section, because the chase instinct is the one trait a Whippet home must plan around.

If you love the sighthound elegance at a smaller scale, the Italian Greyhound is the toy-sized cousin, with the same gentle nature and the same honest pricing from us.

Can a Whippet Be Left Alone During Work Hours?

Moderately, once settled, and better than its sensitivity might suggest, provided the day includes real company and its sprint is not skipped. A Whippet that has run and been loved will happily sleep away a quiet afternoon; a lonely, under-exercised one becomes anxious. This is a companion breed at heart, and evenings that belong to the dog are the contract.

The room needs soft, warm bedding away from a cold aircon draught, water, and a safe space, and the exercise and chase notes below decide the rest.

Good fit if

  • Private housing and a calm, affectionate home
  • You can give a safe daily sprint, plus cool-hour walks
  • You accept a leash-first, chase-driven sighthound

Calm Indoors, Lightning Outdoors: The Two Sides of a Whippet

The Whippet's charm is a genuine contradiction. Indoors it is one of the laziest, most serene dogs you will ever meet, a devoted couch companion that seems to run on standby. Outdoors, given the space, it explodes into one of the fastest domestic animals on earth, reaching around 50 km/h in a few strides. Understanding both sides is the key to a happy Whippet: it needs the sprint to earn the serenity.

Which brings the one rule every Whippet home lives by: the chase instinct is hard-wired. A sighthound is built to pursue anything that darts, and at full speed no recall on earth will bring it back in time. So a Whippet is a leash-first dog in any open area, a secure garden is worth its weight in gold, and a safe, enclosed space to sprint is the ideal. Singapore's public leash law suits the breed perfectly. Respect the chase, and the Whippet gives you the easiest indoor life of any athletic dog.

Whippet Size, Coat and Lifespan

Honest numbers for a lean, elegant sighthound.

Whippet Size, Coat and Lifespan
TraitWhat to expect
Adult weightRoughly 10 to 16 kg; lean and light for its height
HeightAround 44 to 51 cm at the shoulder
CoatShort, fine, very low-maintenance; fawn, blue, brindle, black, white and mixes
LifespanAbout 12 to 15 years, a healthy and long-lived breed
ExerciseA daily safe sprint plus relaxed cool-hour walks; less marching than most
ComfortThin coat and lean build: needs soft bedding and warmth away from cold aircon

The fine coat is about as low-effort as grooming gets, a weekly wipe and the occasional bath, but that same thinness means a Whippet feels temperature keenly. A soft, warm bed away from the aircon draught is the one comfort this breed genuinely needs.

Whippet Price in Singapore: What You’ll Pay and What’s Included

Uncommon here, so litters are limited; the market runs $3,000 to $6,000. Here's ours in writing: $4,580 to $6,280, all-in.

Typical Singapore market

  • Whippet price commonly $3,000 to $6,000
  • Rare breed locally, so litters are limited
  • Inclusions rarely spelt out
  • Starter supplies, training and delivery charged separately

Curious Tails

  • $4,580 to $6,280, printed right here
  • $500+ starter kit with 30+ items included
  • Free home delivery with the playpen set up before you arrive
  • Free first lesson with an AVS-certified trainer, plus free boarding after deposit

Why is our price printed? We don't carry the marketing spend the bigger names do, and we'd rather win on value and word of mouth. Compare the full picture on our transparent puppy pricing page, and plan the ongoing costs with the first-year puppy budget guide.

The $500+ Starter Kit Every Whippet Goes Home With

Every Whippet leaves us with a starter kit worth $500 and up: more than 30 items across eight categories, a playpen, a carrier, grooming tools, puppy food, outdoor gear, toilet training supplies, oral health care, and toys. For this lean, thin-coated breed a soft, warm bed is the item that matters most, and on delivery day we make sure the resting spot is comfortable and away from a cold draught.

On delivery day, Nelson or Kim walks you through every item: how to use it, and how it fits into your Whippet's daily care. Most of the questions new owners would otherwise ask later are answered before we leave your home.

Whippet Health: What We Check and What to Watch

Every Whippet goes home vet-checked, vaccinated, dewormed, and microchipped. Whippets are one of the healthier, longer-lived breeds we carry, with few of the structural problems that trouble more exaggerated dogs. The honest watch-points are gentle ones: the thin skin bruises and nicks more easily than a thick-coated dog\'s, so play areas should be free of sharp hazards; the lean build means Whippets can be sensitive to some anaesthetics and to cold, both worth a quick word with your vet; and as a deep-chested breed, sensible feeding routines around exercise are wise.

Feeding is simple: your puppy comes with the food it is already eating, portioned for a naturally lean frame, and any change should be gradual over a week. Do not mistake a Whippet\'s slim silhouette for underweight; this breed is meant to be lithe. See the puppy health checks explained guide.

Extremely satisfied with nelson’s customer service, all the way from our first visit, to letting us pet each puppy and giving us ample time to choose a puppy that connected with us. He really gave us the chance to interact with each dog and choose one that really formed a special connection with us. We took so much time but finally chose a puppy we were very happy to take home and house. He gave so many freebies all included in the price. He even explained in detail the function of each freebie and made sure all paperwork was done smoothly. Really very thankful for nelson’s service.

Whippet FAQs

Can I keep a Whippet in an HDB flat?

No. The Whippet is a medium sighthound and is not on the HDB-approved list. Condos and landed homes may keep up to three dogs, subject to the estate's own rules, which is where the Whippet belongs in Singapore. HDB readers drawn to the elegant sighthound look: our HDB-approved breeds guide maps the approved small breeds that fit both the rules and flat living.

How much does a Whippet cost in Singapore?

Whippets are uncommon in Singapore, so litters are limited and prices commonly run $3,000 to $6,000. At Curious Tails, Whippet puppies are $4,580 to $6,280, and that price already includes the $500+ starter kit, free home delivery and setup, and a free first training lesson with an AVS-certified trainer.

Are Whippets calm enough for apartment living?

Behaviourally, yes, remarkably so. The Whippet is the classic "couch potato that can hit 50 km/h": give it a good sprint and it will spend the rest of the day curled quietly on the softest surface it can find. It is gentle, quiet and undemanding indoors. The catch is not behaviour but rules: the Whippet is not HDB-approved, so it belongs in private housing.

Can I let a Whippet off-leash? Do they chase?

Treat the Whippet as a leash-first dog in any open space. It is a sighthound with a strong instinct to chase anything that darts, and at full sprint it is faster than you can ever call back, so open-field recall is never something to gamble on. A secure garden and a leash in public, which Singapore law requires anyway, keep this gentle dog safe from its own instincts.

How much exercise does a Whippet need in our heat?

Less total time than you might expect, but the right kind. A Whippet needs a daily chance to run and stretch those legs, ideally a hard sprint in a safe, enclosed space, plus relaxed cool-hour walks. Keep the hard running to the early morning or evening, never the midday heat, and this thin-coated breed is happy with far less marching than most dogs its size.

Is a "miniature whippet" or a "blue whippet" something special?

Two labels worth understanding before you pay a premium for either. There is no separate "miniature" or "mini" Whippet breed; the term usually means a smaller-than-standard Whippet or, quite often, an Italian Greyhound or a Whippet-cross being marketed up, and if you specifically want the smaller flat-legal sighthound, the Italian Greyhound is the honest answer. "Blue" (and other dilute colours) is a coat fad, not a rarer or healthier dog, and dilute colours can occasionally carry their own skin and coat issues. We would rather match you to a sound, well-bred Whippet than a size or colour label.

What happens after I reserve a Whippet?

You place a deposit, and we board your puppy for free, food and lodging covered, until you're ready. Delivery is scheduled around your availability, and we set up the playpen and walk you through all 30+ starter-kit items, including soft bedding for that lean frame, before we leave.
