What is a Shihpoo?

The Shihpoo is a designer cross between the Shih Tzu and the Toy or Miniature Poodle, typically 4 to 7 kg. The recipe: take the Shih Tzu's easygoing, palace-bred companionship, add the Poodle's low-shedding coat and quicker mind, and subtract most of the flat-faced snoring. Lifespan is 13 to 16 years.

Curious Tails is an AVS licensed pet shop at 2 Balestier Road. We match by lifestyle first, and the Shihpoo suits homes that loved the Shih Tzu's temperament but wanted a lower-shedding coat and a faster study.

Shihpoo Temperament: The Chill Parent's Charm, the Smart Parent's Brain

The Shihpoo inherits from two very different job descriptions. From the Shih Tzu side comes a thousand years of professional companionship: easygoing, affectionate, happy on a lap, unbothered by a quiet afternoon. From the Poodle side comes the spark: quicker learning, more playfulness, and a livelier interest in games than a purebred Shih Tzu usually shows.

The honest part, from two years of matching crosses to families: individual Shihpoos land at different points between the parents. Some are nappers with occasional zoomies; some are busy little students with a nap habit. We tell you honestly where each puppy in a litter sits, because we've watched them, and matching the right pup to your routine matters more with crosses than with predictable purebreds.

Comparing crosses? The Maltipoo is the daintier, more people-dependent cousin; the Cavapoo the more independent one.

Can a Shihpoo Be Left Alone During Work Hours?

Reasonably well, and better than most toy crosses. The Shih Tzu half brings genuine composure about quiet hours; the Poodle half wants something to do, so leave chew work and a puzzle feeder. With a settled routine and a cool room, most Shihpoos handle a working household gracefully.

As always with part-Shih-Tzu dogs, the room temperature matters: cool and ventilated through the afternoon, water everywhere. The muzzle is usually longer than a purebred Shih Tzu's, which helps, but we keep the same heat habits anyway.

Good fit if

  • Working household wanting a low-shed companion
  • You liked the Shih Tzu but want faster training
  • Family with gentle children

Shihpoo Size, Coat and Lifespan

Honest numbers for the Shih Tzu × Poodle cross.

Shihpoo Size, Coat and Lifespan
TraitWhat to expect
Adult weightRoughly 4 to 7 kg, depending on the Poodle parent's size
HeightAround 20 to 28 cm at the shoulder
CoatSoft, wavy to curly, low-shedding; gold, cream, apricot, black, brown, and parti mixes
Lifespan13 to 16 years; both parent breeds are long-lived
ExerciseAbout 30 to 40 minutes a day plus indoor play; a flat is genuinely enough
Shedding & allergiesVery low-shedding; one of the friendlier picks for allergy-sensitive homes

A practical note on faces: most Shihpoos inherit a muzzle midway between the Shih Tzu's flat face and the Poodle's pointed one, which usually means less snoring and better heat tolerance than the purebred parent, one of the quiet advantages of this cross in our climate.

The $500+ Starter Kit Every Shihpoo Goes Home With

Every Shihpoo leaves us with a starter kit worth $500 and up: more than 30 items across eight categories, a playpen, a carrier, grooming tools, small-breed puppy food, outdoor gear, toilet training supplies, oral health care, and toys. For this cross the brush earns daily use, soft mixed coats tangle quietly, and the face wipes handle the eye-area care most Shihpoos inherit from the Shih Tzu side.

On delivery day, Nelson or Kim walks you through every item: how to use it, and how it fits into your Shihpoo's daily care. Most of the questions new owners would otherwise ask later are answered before we leave your home.

Shihpoo vs Shih Tzu: Cross or Classic?

The honest trade between the cross and its famous parent: the purebred Shih Tzu gives you predictability, you know the size, coat, face and temperament you're getting, plus that unmatched palace-dog chill. The Shihpoo trades a little predictability for a lower-shedding coat, quicker training, usually a longer muzzle (less snoring, better in our heat), and often a touch more playfulness.

Allergy-sensitive homes and first-time trainers lean Shihpoo; lovers of the classic look and the maximum-chill temperament lean Shih Tzu. With us the price, the starter kit, and the aftercare are identical either way.

Weighing the two? See our Shih Tzu puppies, or message us your routine and we'll tell you straight.

Quick comparison

  • Shihpoo: lower-shedding, quicker to train, longer muzzle
  • Shih Tzu: predictable classic, maximum chill
  • Same price, same starter kit, same aftercare either way

Keeping a Shihpoo in an HDB flat

The Shihpoo is a cross of two HDB-approved breeds, the Shih Tzu and the Toy Poodle, and falls comfortably inside HDB's small-breed rules the same way our Cavapoos and Maltipoos do. HDB allows one dog of an approved breed per flat, and every Shihpoo we place has its dog licensing completed at purchase.

Is a Shihpoo HDB-friendly? Yes: both parents are named on the approved list and the cross sits well within the size rules. Mind the one-dog-per-flat rule, and if you already have a dog, message us first so we can check your situation.

Read HDB's guidelines on keeping pets

The rules in brief

  • Both parent breeds are on the HDB-approved list
  • One dog of an approved breed per HDB flat (AVS limits of ownership)
  • Condo and landed homes: up to three dogs, subject to your estate's own pet rules

Grooming: Soft Coats Tangle Quietly

The Shihpoo's soft, low-shedding coat is the low-allergen dream with one string attached: hair that doesn't fall out stays in and knots. Plan on brushing every other day, a comb-through weekly to the skin, and a salon groom every 4 to 6 weeks; nearly every Singapore Shihpoo lives happily in a puppy cut.

The daily ten-second habit is the face: most Shihpoos inherit expressive Shih Tzu eyes that appreciate a quick wipe to prevent tear staining. Everything you need to start is in the kit, and we show you the routine on delivery day.

Shihpoo Health: What We Check Before You Take One Home

Every Shihpoo goes home vet-checked, vaccinated, dewormed, and microchipped. Cross-breed vigour helps, drawing from two long-lived parents, and the points worth knowing come from both sides: patellar luxation, the small-breed kneecap issue; eye care, from the Shih Tzu's prominent-eye inheritance, milder in the cross but worth the daily wipe; and dental crowding in smaller jaws, met with the day-one brushing habit.

Feeding is simple: your puppy comes with the food it is already eating, and any change should be gradual over a week. See the puppy health checks explained guide.

Your Shihpoo's First Week at Home

Day 0: we deliver, free, at a time that suits you, usually morning or evening. The playpen, bed, water, and toys are set up before your Shihpoo explores the room, and we walk you through all 30+ starter-kit items in person. Learn more about how our free home delivery and setup works.

Days 1 to 3: keep it calm and predictable. A fixed feeding routine, the toilet pads where we placed them, short gentle play, and the face-wipe habit starting now. Some night whimpering is normal adjustment.

Days 4 to 7: the routine sticks and the personality mix reveals itself, nap-lover, little student, or both. Book your free first lesson with an AVS-certified trainer this week; see what the free AVS-certified training lesson covers.

  • We visited a few places before Curious Tails, but their Balestier store stood out immediately. Nelson was professional and reassuring, and made sure we felt confident every step of the way. The full vaccination was already covered, which showed how much they care. If you want peace of mind buying a puppy, this is the place.

Buying safely: verify any pet shop's AVS licence first

Every legitimate pet shop in Singapore is listed on the AVS public registry of licensed pet shops. Search the shop's name or licence number before paying any deposit, to anyone; if a seller isn't on the registry, they aren't licensed, whatever the listing claims.

Curious Tails holds AVS pet shop licence AS24J00046. Check us first; an honest shop won't mind, and a genuine seller never will. Puppies sold outside licensed channels are often smuggled without vaccination, and buyers have been fined $7,000 for unknowingly purchasing one. Popular toy crosses like the Shihpoo are smuggled often, so check twice here.

Search the AVS public registry

Before you pay anyone

Shihpoo FAQs

How much does a Shihpoo cost in Singapore?

Shihpoo prices in Singapore commonly run from around $2,500 to $5,000 depending on colour and coat. At Curious Tails, Shihpoo puppies are $4,288 to $4,888, and that price already includes the $500+ starter kit, free home delivery and setup, and a free first training lesson with an AVS-certified trainer.

Is a Shihpoo HDB-approved?

Yes, as an approved cross: the Shihpoo is a Shih Tzu × Toy Poodle mix, and both parent breeds are named on the HDB-approved list, with the cross falling comfortably inside the small-breed rules. HDB allows one dog per flat, and we complete the dog licensing for you at purchase.

What is a Shihpoo exactly?

A cross between the Shih Tzu and the Toy or Miniature Poodle, aiming for the Shih Tzu's easygoing companionship with the Poodle's low-shedding coat and quicker mind. Most Shihpoos land 4 to 7 kg with a soft wavy-to-curly coat in a wide range of colours.

Do Shihpoos shed? Are they good for allergies?

Both parents are low-shedding breeds, so the Shihpoo is one of the more allergy-friendly crosses available; expect very little loose hair. No dog is truly allergen-free, so if allergies are severe, spend time with one at our Balestier shop before deciding.

Can a Shihpoo be left alone while we are at work?

Reasonably well, sitting between its parents: more self-sufficient than the velcro companions thanks to the Shih Tzu's composed streak, more engaged than a pure lapdog thanks to the Poodle brain. A settled routine, a safe playpen, and something to work on carries most Shihpoos through a working household's weekday.

Are Shihpoos easier to train than Shih Tzus?

Usually, yes; the Poodle half sharpens the learning speed, and toilet training in particular tends to come faster than in the purebred Shih Tzu. There can still be a charming stubborn moment or two in there. Short, cheerful, food-led sessions win, and the free first lesson sets the pattern.

How big will a Shihpoo get full grown, and is its coat guaranteed low-shedding?

Honest answer on both: because the Shihpoo is a cross, there is a little natural variation. Most land between 4 and 8 kg full grown, depending mainly on the Poodle parent, and there is no separate "teacup" Shihpoo, whatever a listing promises. The coat usually leans low-shedding, but it can come out straighter like the Shih Tzu or curlier like the Poodle, and a straighter coat sheds a touch more. We tell you each puppy's likely adult size and coat type honestly, so you plan for the dog you will actually have.

Are Shihpoos yappy?

They can be a little vocal, yes, more than the placid Shih Tzu on its own, and it is one of the honest trade-offs of the cross. It is very manageable: early socialisation, not rewarding attention-barking, and enough daily engagement keep a Shihpoo's voice sensible. The free first lesson with an AVS-certified trainer covers exactly this, and we would rather flag it now than have it surprise you later.

What happens after I reserve a Shihpoo?

You place a deposit, and we board your puppy for free, food and lodging covered, until you're ready. Delivery is scheduled around your availability, and we set up the playpen and walk you through all 30+ starter-kit items before we leave.
