Here is the honest part we lead with, from two years of matching puppies to families: a Maltese's need for company is the single thing that decides whether the match works. In a home with someone usually around, a Maltese is a delight. In an empty home from 8am to 6pm, that same devotion can turn into whining and separation anxiety.
With gentle children the Maltese is sweet and patient, but at 3 to 4 kg it is a delicate dog; homes with boisterous toddlers are usually better served by the sturdier Cockapoo, and we'll say so.
Can a Maltese Be Left Alone During Work Hours?
Honestly, this is where you should pause. The Maltese, like the Maltipoo, copes least well of our breeds with long stretches alone, because company is the whole point of the breed.
